POWER

What we do

We develop renewable and flexible low carbon generation projects as an essential and complimentary source of energy for the UK. We also work with commercial high energy users to develop more secure, lower cost and sustainable generation solutions.

Whilst renewable energy will continue to grow, gas still accounts for the largest percentage of the UKs power generation, with smaller more flexible gas generation plants providing an important source of stable, or ‘non-intermittent’ power.  A power generation project can provide landowners and businesses with an attractive opportunity to utilise otherwise redundant land and benefit from an attractive, long term index linked rental income.

Businesses which are energy intensive face both high non-commodity costs as well as more volatile wholesale prices.  Onsite generation offers both security of supply, and is likely to result in significant cost savings whilst improving the sustainability profile of a business.  We work with land and business owners to identify and assess opportunities to maximise the value of their assets and reduce energy costs.

Flexible power

Building more flexible gas generation is essential and complimentary if the UK is to continue to increase renewable energy generation.  OCGT engines are a well established and proven technology and, particularly when used as flexible peaking generation, emit up to 50% less CO2 than coal fired generation.    Smaller gas generation facilities can participate in the Capacity Market and benefit from a range of additional revenue streams.

In 2018 we gained planning consent for over 80MW of projects and continue to work with landowners and commercial organisations to develop projects of up to 49.9MW in size.

A typical 20 MW project requires less than an  acre of land, and provides power on demand in as little as 2 minutes from start up.

Industrial Building

Commercial development

For many high energy users, such as distribution, logistics and technology businesses, onsite generation can provide either base load and/or back up power.   As well as providing power resilience, there may also be an opportunity to reduce exposure to non-commodity costs, which have increased as a percentage of overall energy costs.

For existing businesses, surplus land could be used to build a flexible gas generation facility either by the business itself or by a third party investor who then enters into an energy services agreement to supply power to the landowner at a material discount to the existing supplier.    We work with experienced energy investors which can fully fund a project at no cost to the land owner.

For vacant land, we have the expertise and experience to bring a large power connection to a site, sometimes on an enhanced timeline, which widens the potential commercial development options, and maximising the land value by attracting interest from a wider group of buyers.   We can work with landowners in a number of ways, including an option to lease arrangement, promotional agreement or other acquisition rights.

Renewable power

The percentage of the UKs power coming from renewables is now over 30% of total generation.    Although much of this growth has been offshore wind, post subsidies, falling equipment and installation costs of large scale solar are leading to more businesses considering ‘private wire’ developments, energy services agreements and private purchase agreements ( ‘PPAs’), which provide a stable source of future income to support the capital investment needed.

Our team has acquired, consented and sold large scale commercial solar sites, and also acquired, consented, arranged the funding and provided advisory services for a number of onshore wind developments, from 500kW single turbines to wind farms in excess of 15MWs.

We have also worked extensively with financial investors providing due diligence and project management services for low carbon and renewable energy generation projects.
